Welcome to The Road to Copenhagen

Welcome to The Road to Copenhagen, a blog about the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. My name is Simeon Talley and I will be one of ten Iowa students attending the climate change conference as an observer.

I created this blog as a way to communicate and share my experiences leading up to and while in Copenhagen. I also created this blog to serve as a forum for dialogue about climate change and the Copenhagen process. In Copenhagen the stakes will be high. This historic conference may be the last chance for the world to put itself on a sustainable path before it’s too late. The science is clear and world opinion is in clear support of an international agreement. What is not clear though, is the political will or the resolve of the world’s leaders to reach an agreement where all will have to sacrifice.

The countries participating in Copenhagen will come with many varying perspectives. Too often the voices of young people or voices of the poor are excluded. The Road to Copenhagen will highlight the voices of young people and explore the perspectives of those we typically don’t hear from.

Regardless of our differences what unites all of us, is our common humanity. What bridges all divides that exist, is our common fate as a human race – we all live and share the earth. Whether leaders in Copenhagen can move past their differences and reach an agreement remains to be seen. Till then, it’s important for everyone – students, academics, scientisst, teachers, John Doe, etc. – to be a part of the debate. The Road to Copenhagen will provide unique voices and fresh perspectives in this important debate.

I hope you’ll participate.
